Biogas to Energy

Dealing with the biogas produced from landfills and anaerobic digesters at municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants is an issue with both energy use and environmental impacts.  Biogas typically contains a mixture of varying concentrations of methane, carbon dioxide (CO2), water vapor, and other gasses.  If released to the atmosphere, the methane in the biogas has a greenhouse gas impact that is 21 times that of CO2 - according to the US EPA.  Environmental regulations require that biogas be burned in a flare to convert the methane to CO2 and to reduce greenhouse gas effects.  Many landfills and anaerobic digester operators have chosen the alternative of burning the biogas in engines to generate electric power, or burning the biogas directly in boilers for heat recovery.

Biogas Facility Design and Construction

Aether dbs provides comprehensive professional engineering services for biogas energy recovery systems including mechanical, civil, structural, electrical, and I&C design.  Aether dbs construction managers also oversee the installation and construction of biogas energy recovery systems either as a general contractor, or as the Owner’s representative.

Biogas Equipment Fabrication

Aether dbs also engineers and manufactures biogas conditioning and compression equipment for use in biogas-to-energy recovery systems.  We will custom-design, supply, and fabricate skid-mounted equipment for your specific biogas requirements including;

  • Coalescing filters
  • Hydrogen sulfide removal
  • Carbon Dioxide removal
  • Biogas compressors
  • Gas cooling and re-heating
  • Automatic control Systems
  • Plant air compressors

Don’t Flare: Biogas Blending

In many facilities, biogas is still flared because its production rate is too small, or has methane content too low for cost-effective generation of electric power or heat recovery. Flaring gas is expensive and wastes a valuable resource.  Recently, aether dbs has developed solutions to make this low-value biogas a usable product for energy recovery.  By conditioning the biogas and blending it with LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas), a synthetic natural gas (SNG) can be produced that mimics the properties of natural gas.   Biogas SNG can be used for any number of applications including engines, boilers, furnaces, heat exchangers, or any combustion unit that is designed to burn natural gas.  Also, biogas can simply be blended with natural gas depending on the desired end use of the gas stream.

Aether dbs holds a unique position in the Gas-to-Energy sector in that we have both the engineering capabilities and a certified manufacturing and fabrication facility to customize a biogas solution for your alternate energy needs.   Our Active Flow Control (AFC) TM blending system incorporates automatic control valves and monitoring devices to ACTIVELY and automatically adjust the flow of the gases to compensate for the variations in the gas streams.  Whether it’s used to blend biogas into a natural gas stream, or to blend biogas with LPG to produce SNG, you are ensured the consistent BTU output you need for your application.

Why use a Biogas Blend?

  • It can be used with your existing equipment
  • It can be mixed with natural gas
  • Save money on natural gas purchases to run equipment
  • Save money by eliminating the supplemental fuel needed to flare biogas
  • It provides an emergency backup to natural gas
  • It provides peak natural gas demand reduction

We have the engineering capabilities to design, install, and maintain gas-to-energy systems for:

  • Municipalities with covered lagoons or anaerobic digesters
  • Solid Waste Landfills
  • Food Processing Companies
  • Breweries
  • Dairies
